The Translation Process: Deformatting Content
When content that has already been processed for publication (website files, .pdf documents, printed catalogues, etc.) is
submitted for translation, the source files must be treated in order to obtain a suitable text with which to begin the translation process. This costly "deformatting" process may range from the conversion of DTP files to the manual re-writing of the source text in a text processing program.
Why do we do this? There are various reasons:
- In order to obtain an initial word count.
- In order to analyse the text against our translation memories.
- In order to estimate the time necessary for the completion of translation.
- In order to be able to distribute the text among a team of translators.
All these factors are centred on two fundamental objectives: the reduction of the time, and therefore the cost, employed in the translation process and the optimisation of the quality of the final translation.
